On Friday, May 22, St. Andrew’s Head of School Lucy Nazro presented Gilbert Tuhabonye, executive director of the Gazelle Foundation, with a check for $40,000 to fund a water project in Burundi. The money was raised during a year-long effort by each grade level that included a variety of fundraising programs to support the effort. The kids’ creativity was clearly apparent, from first graders collecting over $1,500 in change, a second grade read-a-thon, a third grade donut sale, fourth grade bake sale, fifth grade water bottle sale, sixth grade “Drum for Water” concert, a variety of middle school efforts and T-shirt sales by the upper school.
The project provided a valuable learning experience to all involved as kids and parents learned how clean water can change lives of people forever and help break a cycle of poverty and lead to healthy, productive lives. Moreover, the kids learned that they can set high goals, devise an action plan, achieve their objectives and actually change the world for the better.
The Foundation is indebted to the entire St. Andrew’s community for their efforts and looks forward to moving forward with the “St. Andrew’s Water Project.”
This Voice in My Heart recounts Gilbert's uplifting journey from holocaust survivor to running champion.
