The Foundation’s first water project is in the mountainous Songa province of Southern Burundi. After lengthy preparation and negotiations, the project began in the second quarter of 2009. And was completed in November 2009. The Gazelle Foundation has partnered with Food for the Hungry, an independent charitable organization to assist us in managing the project.
The project involves collecting water from a year-round spring into a large covered cistern and filtration system. The cistern connects to over 5 kilometers of buried pipe that was trenched and installed by hand. The gravity-fed system has two intermediate cisterns to ensure constant supply and ten ‘fountains” along its length to provide water to the approximately 2000 people in the immediate area.
The Foundation is thankful for our donor’s support to allow us to proceed with this challenging project. Food for the Hungry provided outstanding on-site management and allowed the project to continue despite several challenges.
